Cruise: The Christ of Scientology?

“Tom Cruise is not just one of Hollywood’s leading actors, he is also the new ‘Christ’ of Scientology, leaders of the religion apparently believe.

Reports in the Sun newspaper claim that he has been told he is the “chosen one” to spread news about the faith.

Leader David Miscavige also believes that in years to come the Mission: Impossible actor will be worshipped like Jesus for his efforts to raise the profile of the religion, according to the British tabloid.

A source said to be close to Cruise told the paper: “Tom has been told he is Scientology’s Christ-like figure.

“Like Christ, he’s been criticised for his views. But future generations will realise he was right”…(via Manchester.com)

  1. I’m not “one of their marketing people” - I’m a Scientologist volunteer with schoolage kids, who is concerned that people like you, who know NOTHING about my religion, so flippantly say stuff like “I don’t feel sorry for them, I think they’re crazy!”

We are people just like you. And it’s sad that you can be so damn callous about your fellow man, crazy or not.

In terms of that stupid story, the “UK Sun” (the tabloid that started this idiocy to begin with) is lying. You can see the Church’s official statement here: http://news.bostonherald.com/letters/view.bg?articleid=179702

  2. (Sorry, I was on MSN with another blogger. I was going to post a reply here too, and my wires got crossed. )

Anyway, the point is the story is BS.

    Thanks

  3. I appreciate your visit Greg. Could you point me towards some literature on your theological beliefs as a scientologist…?

  4. No one even knows where this preposterous “Cruise as Christ” lie came from (”an undisclosed source” ;) but that didn’t stop virtually every media outlet on the planet from picking the story up and running with it.

The Church released a statement expressingly denying any truth to this made-up story, and yet very few media outlets are covering this. An unknown nobody can take anonymous pot shots at someone and have it broadcast around the globe, and yet the truth as presented by a verifiable and reliable source - the Church itself - doesn’t get an equal chance of rebuttal. Now why do you think that is?

The reason, of course, is that the truth isn’t entertaining. What gets published in today’s sick sad world is that which will make an editor or a reporter giggle.

  5. Which too can be said of Christianity Wax-Q. How many good news stories do you hear about the Christian church in the news? All I’ve heard is scandals and such. It might be that reporters have a strong dislike for public religions.
