So What’s The Deal With Lecrae: Can He Say “Spurgeon” in a Rap?

Proving again that I live in a bubble, I just came across Lecrae for the first time this weekend. Who is he? What is he about? What’s his deal? Let’s find out…

Who? *boom* What? *boom*

Christian rapper Lecrae had this to say in his song “Fanatic”:

“What can I do to make it simple, make it plain,
Christ came, emptied himself and let our sin hang him,
You couldn’t blame him for any sin,
While they singing many men,
The crucifixion was pretty grim,
But when we state the fact that God resurrects,
We get funny looks from a world that doesn’t get it,
We are not David Koresh or Krishna,
Or the people on TV who glorifying their bishop,
From Edwards to Piper, MacAurther to Spurgeon,
From Dallas to France, From Cali to Berlin.

As Christians all over who getting the word in,
We ain’t crazy we just understand the truth and we burdened,
The world sees us as evangelical Christians,
As narrow-minded fanatics with a mythical mission,
Labeled extremists for sharing out faith,
But thats cool, we can carry the weight of persecution,
Cuz earth is losing,
And if we yelling the truth,
We honored to be the people that our God is using…”

In an interview about his recent album release, we get an inside look into who this man is, and what he has to say to the world:

Lyricallys speaking, his raps are full of theology. John Piper likes him enough to have him rap in his church, as well as similar artists like Curtis “Voice” Allen. And not only does Lecrae sing, he ministers as well:

So what’s the deal? Is he real?

What say you?-

============

“…Christ still gonna come.
And matter of fact, if He come now,
You could be a six-eight heavy weight,
But your knee’s gonna bow.
Ain’t gonna ease on down,
Cause when that trump sounds loud,
Everybody’s gonna see the ground.”
- Lecrae

For those of you who are interested in hearing some more of his music, visit his ‘myspace’ page and listen to a few. ( “The King” is pretty good… )

  1. You know i’m a fan, bro!

    p-dizzle

  2. Yeah, Lecrae is Legit. Few rappers like the ones on Reach Records and Cross Movement Records, along with some cats in St. Louis like Future, This’l and JSon, are legit. Some claimm to rap for Christ but still focus on things. Praise God for Lecrae and the others like him reaching today’s youth and hip-hop culture!

  3. Lecrae is my favorite rapper right now, Flame, Trip Lee, Sho Baraka and Tadashii are also awesome

  4. I think it’s another clear testament of God’s creative genius, to use a seemingly “unclean” thing such as the hip-hop genre. Being a native of it’s influences I thank God that His truthis clearly expressed thru these men.
